About Azores Teas: A Journey into the Flavors of the Atlantic

Azores tea plantation in Sao Miguel

Nestled in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores Islands are a hidden gem known for their breathtaking landscapes, volcanic properties, and rich cultural heritage. But did you know that these islands are also home to a unique tea culture?

Azores teas, grown in the mild climate and fertile volcanic soil, offer a distinctive flavor profile that sets them apart from teas produced in other parts of the world. Join us on a journey to explore the history, cultivation, and flavors of Azores teas.

A Brief History of Azores Teas

Tea cultivation in the Azores dates back to the 19th century, when the islands faced economic challenges due to the decline of orange production. Seeking alternative sources of income, the Azoreans turned to tea cultivation.

The exact origins of tea in the Azores are shrouded in mystery, with various stories attributing its introduction to Portuguese commanders or Chinese visitors. However, what is clear is that tea quickly became an important source of income for the islanders, with a peak of 62 tea plantations during its heyday.

The oldest tea plantation still in operation today is Cha Gorreana, located on the picturesque São Miguel Island. Established in 1883, Cha Gorreana is a testament to the enduring legacy of tea cultivation in the Azores. The plantation is managed by the Mota family, who have been involved in tea production for five generations.

The Unique Terroir of Azores Teas

The Azores' mild and humid climate, combined with the fertile volcanic soil, creates the perfect conditions for tea cultivation. The absence of frost throughout the year ensures the tea plants thrive, resulting in flavors that are distinctively Azorean.

The island's natural beauty and abundant rainfall contribute to the tea's unique characteristics, making it a true reflection of the Azores' terroir.

Azores teas are known for their smoothness and balance, with hints of floral and vegetal notes. The island's volcanic soil imparts a mineral-rich quality to the tea, adding depth and complexity to its flavor profile.

Whether you prefer the robustness of black tea or the delicate nuances of green tea, Azores teas offer a taste experience like no other.

My personal favourite is the Hysson green tea, which has none of the very sharp adstringence found in some other green teas.

Cultivation and Production

Tea cultivation in the Azores follows traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. The process begins with the careful selection of tea cuttings, which are then planted in the fertile soil of São Miguel Island. The tea plants are nurtured and cared for, benefiting from the island's favorable climate and abundant rainfall.

Harvesting takes place from April to September, with skilled workers carefully plucking the tender tea leaves by hand. This meticulous process ensures that only the finest leaves are selected for production.

After harvesting, the tea leaves are taken to the processing facility, where they undergo sorting, drying, and fermentation.

The production methods in São Miguel remain true to the island's tea heritage. Many of the machines used for harvesting and processing the leaves are the same as those used in the early days of tea cultivation. This dedication to tradition and craftsmanship is what sets Azores teas apart and contributes to their exceptional quality.

Flavors and Varieties of Azores Teas

Azores teas offer a diverse range of flavors and varieties, catering to different preferences and palates. The most common types of Azores teas include black tea and green tea, each with its own distinctive characteristics.
