What is a Jubilee or Xacobean Year?

1/26/2008

Many guests ask me in regard to our Camino de Santiago tour - what is a Jubilee Year?

First for those who are not familiar with the tour; the Camino is a pilgrimage to the sepulchre of the Apostle James (Santiago) housed in the beautiful cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

There are many different routes to reach Santiago but the best known and most interesting is the French way this is the route we follow. Starting in the Pyrenees on the French border we ride straight across Northern Spain and every step of the way is seeped in history, myth, legend and plenty of miracles. A Jubilee Year is when the 25th of July, the day of Saint James (also patron saint of Spain), lands on a Sunday. The last Jubilee Year was in 1999 and the next one is in 2010.

There are always many festivities and events planned throughout the Jubilee Year all revolving around the Camino de Santiago – so book early!
